What We’re Reading

What We’re Reading

What is on our homeschool bookshelves?  Take a look!

Ann: Not much.  We just moved into our new house a month ago.

Readaloud: Well, we finished the Harry Potter Series last year and enjoyed watching all the movies.  My favorite! Such fun.  Now we’re reading The Secret Garden. Just started it but books like this are always such a joy to readaloud.  It feels like poetry slipping off my tongue.

Big kid: Alanna, The Lioness series.  Another of my favorites.  She’s really enjoying it.  She’s also reading The Golden Goblet but not so happy about it.

Little kid: Reading all the Star Wars Scholastic versions and can’t get enough. He’s also moving on to the Bionicle books.   A bit twaddley but heck, I catch the boy reading for fun, so my personal grudge against twaddle has been pushed aside.  I guess it’s all really about balance. :  )

Listening to in the Car: Not much driving these days.  So, we’re short on audio book listening.  I do miss it but don’t see it returning to my world in the near future.  I’ll just leave it here to see if it finds a way back to my world.

The Self-Soothing Mama

Found this gem in the comments of a Pioneer Woman guest post.  The comment below comes from Marcy.  I’m wondering what you do to care for your self when you feel depleted.  My “go to” is probably to just turn off the alarm clock.  A few years ago, I realized that if I was in that overwhelmed place and I [...]

Review: Creativity Express

Creativity Express is a computer program that teaches art by combing art elements, animated characters, narration and exposure to art, artists and even scientists.
We received Creativity Express at the start of the summer.  I planned to casually use it through the summer months.  Then, my kids got a hold of it.  That was the end of my casual plan.  The [...]

Science and mathematics become ever more complicated every day.  New advances today, become old news tomorrow. Today, our elementary school children are expected to understand many concepts that many of the world’s most famous scientists never even considered.  Ancient scientists and mathematicians started with a blank slate and through time, with curiosity and determination, they have filled in many holes [...]

Crawdaddy Toys Game Review: Hit or Miss

I’ve carried the game Hit or Miss for about a year now but until recently I’d never played it. I finally got the chance while hosting the most recent Game Night at the Lafayette Library. I had asked a mother-daughter-&-son group to test out Hit or Miss, and 10 minutes into their game they were enthusiastically endorsing it. Curious about [...]

Hartney Family Estate Law LLC

Estate Planning for Families with Kids

A whopping 69% of parents do not have any protections in place for their kids if something happened to them. Of those that have, many have made one of the six common mistakes that could make those protections useless. Martha, a local mom and attorney, will help you understand:

  •  How to make sure your children are never taken from your home and placed with strangers if something happens to you.
  •  How to avoid the 6 most common mistakes parents make when naming a guardian.
  •  How to make sure that your assets are immediately and privately available to your guardians.
  •  How you can take control away from judges who don’t know you or your children.
  •  How giving kids money can harm them and what to do instead.

Whether you’re single, married, in a same-sex or a blended family, she’ll help you craft an effective estate and child protection plan so that your loved ones are protected from unnecessary trauma in the event something happens to you.

In contrast to average estate planning firms, Martha knows that the greatest gift you have to give your kids is YOU, your history, your wisdom, your lessons. She will help you develop a personal legacy plan that will make certain that your greatest gift—the gift of who you are—is passed to your children.

Please call today to schedule your Family Wealth Planning Session (a $750 value) for free. At this session, Martha will lead you through what would happen under your current plan or without a plan. And if you decide Martha can help you save your loved ones significant time and heartache by creating an effective estate plan, she will also take 10% off the plan you chose because you are a homeschooling family.

Valedictorian Speech Questioning her Efforts and Results

Harsh words from a valedictorian about compulsory education. A good reminder for homeschoolers to keep our eye on our child-as-a-whole, not on what subjects our child should master. Education as a journey…An Adventure. Here’s to the adventure.
