Homeschool programs that involve teenagers can and should be preparing the student for graduation, and positioning the student for higher education if this is the student’s goal.
A useful approach in the student’s final years of homeschooling is to keep the emphasis on goals. If your child is aiming for college, your emphasis should be on preparing them for the standardized tests they may need to take on order to qualify for their college of choice. If their goals include no college, exploring their personal interests and how these might translate into a career could be your focus.
Perhaps these final years of homeschooling are proving to be quite a challenge however, as your teenager’s attention may have shifted to other things that draw their focus away from class. The respect you held as a teacher or parent may vary in this stage of your student’s life. Maybe you feel that you have lost the attention of your student and the more you try to force them to pay attention to you, the harder it is to reach them.
Remembering what it was like when you were their age can go a long way toward extending your patience in dealing with an unfocused teenager. Remind them that they will ultimately be students in some regard their entire lives, and that the ability to focus and learn is what makes all adults successful. Empathize but be careful to not compromise in your lesson plans. They still need the knowledge that you and your homeschool program can give them, so insist on sticking to a normal class schedule even on days when their attention wanes.
Your child may be excited about their pending graduation, and this will certainly help in their attitude towards your continued teachings. One suggestion is to help your student write out their personal and professional goals and come up with step by step action plans to help them along the path. Helping your student to visualize their future can be a powerful lesson. As your student graduates and becomes an adult, their goals will surely change along the way, but you will have shown them how to prepare and work for any dream that they might have.

Unless you have another child that you are homeschooling, your teen is not the only one who is facing a life-altering change upon his or her graduation. You have had the benefit of spending more time with your child than most parents have had with their children. This has surely been a blessing to you, but it also may mean that you are facing some level of separation anxiety. Do not worry too much. Your role as teacher has served your child well and you will continue to be a teacher to them for many years to come. The lessons you have taught them and the time you both have shared will last their entire lifetimes.
