I have used the ‘Explode the Code’ workbooks for my 4 year old and 6 year old for the past 6 months.
The 4 year old started with the GET READY for THE CODE primers and loved them! She isn’t ready for writing yet but would circle the answers as directed. The 6 year old started with the level 1 book and did not enjoy them. I think they aren’t stimulating enough for her.
I went on to purchase the ‘EXPLODE the CODE’ computer program and had much better success! It doesn’t matter that the 4 year old can’t write. She is 1/2 way through the first book and would be much farther along but another computer program grabbed her attention. The 6 year old is plodding along through book 2 – again another program usurped ETC. All in all, I think this is a sound program. The basics are taught and reinforced over and over again as the child progresses through the books. I prefer the computer program over the paper. The feed back is great for the child and the parent is able to track the progress over time. This is not a glitzy program but if a strong foundation is what you want this suits the bill!

Over the years with different kids I have covered all the Explode the Code series from Get, Ready and Go through Book 8, not the half numbered ones…and I have to say these are great. The girls always look forward to doing them. They have lots of illustrations and variety that kept my kids’ attention. They can do the work by themselves leaving mom free to work with the other kids.

These are excellent phonics workbooks! They have fun pictures and activities that help kids understand phonics, and thus reading and writing. The pictures give clues to the words being introduced, there are silly sentences and funny situations, and enough repetition to really aid learning. My son loved this series! The books truly helped him with reading and spelling.
